A Smith tradition since 1876, when it commemorated the birthday of George Washington, Rally Day is highlighted by a festive all-college gathering at which distinguished alumnae are awarded Smith College Medals by the president.

Four extraordinary alumnae are being honored for their contributions to their communities and the world as 2016 Smith Medalists. This year’s medalists are arts patron Joan White Harris ’52, business leader Phebe Novakovic ’79, social justice activist K. Rea Carey ’89 and documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy ’02.

Reprising the Rally Day House Banner Contest
Once again there will be a house banner contest as part of the Rally Day celebration. Two prizes will be awarded: Most Creative and Best Use of Theme. Each winning house will receive $100 for their house treasury. Banner kits can be picked up in the Office of Student Engagement, CC106.
Introducing the Senior Hat Contest
Seniors, let your imaginations fly! For the first time there will be a hat contest for the seniors participating in Rally Day. Ten finalists will be identified by Smith Fund volunteers as seniors gather at the Campus Center to march to JMG. At the start of the Rally Day Convocation, faculty will vote on two prizes: Most Creative and Best Use of Theme. Winners will each receive a $50 credit for Dining Dollars.
The theme for this year’s Rally Day is “We Are Smith.” President McCartney will announce the winners at the end of convocation.
