I.D. Tags

I.D.Tags are experimental Museum labels that reconsider, through the eyes of individuals, works of art from the permanent collection in terms of contemporary social and cultural issues. All tags are written by Smith College students, faculty, or staff, and present personal thoughts about an artwork. We hope that such reflections will enhance viewers’ experiences through their consideration of how works of art can relate to our current understanding of our cultures and ourselves. We invite you to view the current I.D. Tags in person in the Museum galleries, to consider the past groups of labels in our Web archive of this project, and to respond with your own take on these artworks, as part of the online extension of I.D. Tags.

The inaugural edition of I.D. Tags, on the theme of race, was inspired by I.D.: A Selection of Works in Honor of Otelia Cromwell, Class of 1900, which was on view in honor of Otelia Cromwell Day 2007, an annual celebration in memory of the first African-American graduate of Smith College.
