Panel Discussion: Recovered Histories: Shaping the Legacy of Honoré Sharrer

  • Explore the work, life, and legacy of Honoré Sharrer with the artist's son Adam Zagorin, former senior correspondent for Time magazine; M. Melissa Wolfe, Curator of American Art at the Saint Louis Art Museum and editor of Subversion and Surrealism in the Art of Honoré Sharrer; and moderator Anna Lee, Postdoctoral Fellow, Art Dept., Smith College. 

Gallery Conversation: Japanese Lacquer In the Collection of Dr. Elizabeth Force

  • Yao Wu will introduce the various types of Japanese lacquerware featured in the exhibition and contextualize the objects in the history of 18th- and 19th-century Japanese lacquer production and consumption. Joannah Peterson will discuss aspects of the Heian-period (794-1185) literary tradition that informed the codification of natural motifs seen in the collection on view, including the rich symbolism offered by the narrative of The Tale of Genji.

    Joannah Peterson teaches courses in Japanese language and premodern Japanese literature and culture at Smith College. Yao Wu is the Jane Chace Carroll Curator of Asian Art at the Smith College Museum of Art and curator of the exhibition, Japanese Lacquer In the Collection of Dr. Elizabeth Force
