Internships, research and other employment opportunities are an excellent way to gain exposure to a specific field and allow practical applications to complement students' academic studies.

Lazarus Center for Career Development

Smith's Lazarus Center is an excellent resource for career advising and internship and job opportunities.

Each month the Lazarus center publishes a Career Engineering Newsletter with opportunities for engineering students.

Praxis Summer Internship Funding

The Smith College Praxis program funds students to work at substantive, unpaid summer internships related to their academic or career interests. The program is administered through the Lazarus Center for Career Development and is available once to all students during their four years at Smith.

Smith Summer Research Fellows Program (SURF)

Smith's SURF program offers science and engineering students the opportunity for independent research in collaboration with a faculty adviser during the summer.

Research with Faculty During Academic Year

Individual faculty members often involve students to work within their research lab. Students should inquire directly with faculty whose work interests them.

Achieving Excellence in Mathematics, Engineering and Science (AEMES)

The AEMES programs at Smith works with students in historically underrepresented social groups to obtain research experiences in the STEM fields.

Smith Student Research in Departments (STRIDE)

Smith's STRIDE Program enables high-achieving students during their first two years at Smith to team up with Smith faculty as paid research assistants.

Master Tutors and Graders

Students who have performed well in a course have the opportunity to be a master tutor or grader in subsequent years. Training is available through the Jacobson Center for Writing, Teaching and Learning and the Spinelli Center for Quantitative Learning.

Off-Campus Research Opportunities

Students are encouraged to search the Web for REU (research opportunities for undergraduates) offers at research universities throughout the country. Plan ahead; applications can be due as early as January.
