Nepal Earthquake relief

Our hearts and thoughts go out to all of our students affected by the tragic earthquake that occurred on April 25th in Nepal. We are saddened by the devastation that it has brought, and we hope the Smith community can band together to support those students during this time of deep grieving.

If you wish to donate to the aid efforts currently underway in Nepal, please find below a list of organizations suggested to us by Smith's Nepali community.

American Nepal Medical Foundation

On Tuesday, April 28th at 7pm, we will gather for a candelight vigil on the Chapin steps of the Campus Center. We encourage all to join and stand in support and honor Nepal and the victims of this terrible tragedy.

Nepal Orphans Home is another organization doing wonderful humanitarian work in the Kathmandu area. It is run by a Smith alumna, has Smith alumnae on its Board or Directors, and has served as a Praxis site for several Smith students.

Information about their operations can be found at www.nepalorphanshome.org where the donate page features their Earthquake Relief Fund. Updates will be posted periodically to their Facebook page as well.

Hampshire College will also hold a candlelight vigil, which all are welcome to attend.

In response to Saturday's earthquake in Nepal the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) has provided an online mapping platform that allows volunteers to help map the infrastructure of the areas in Nepal effected by the earthquake.

Mapping road networks and structures is critically important to help responders navigate the area to provide assistance to those in need. The online mapping platform can be accessed by any web browser and requires no previous experience to contribute.

The Smith Spatial Analysis Lab is offering a workshop over lunch Wednesday, April 29 to both teach the basics of using this online mapping platform and to provide a space and time for the Smith community to contribute to this effort.

All students, faculty, staff, and community members are welcome to join the workshop. It will be hosted from 12pm - 1pm this Wednesday (4/29) in the Spatial Analysis Lab (Sabin-reed 104).

Lunch will be provided for the first 20 attendees.

Attendees are welcome to join late and/or leave early if necessary. The lab has 20 computers available for use, but participants are welcome/encouraged to bring laptops to work on in the case we have more than 20 attendees.

If you plan to attend please take two minutes to sign-up withOpenStreetMapin advance, seeing as that we will have limited time during the workshop to cover everything.

Read Our Tumblr

We have a Tumblr established last year for current students. Updated about twice a week during the school year, the Tumblr is managed by our office student staff and is a good place to find tips about events, as well as news from the office. Check out the Smith International Tumblr.
