Joyce Follet, Coordinator of Collection Development

As Coordinator of Collection Development, Joyce oversees the selection and acquisition of primary source materials for the Sophia Smith Collection (SSC), with related responsibilities for outreach, donor relations, and fundraising.

Joyce comes to this work with a Ph.D. in Women's History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and several years of experience as a public historian at the University of Wisconsin, where she taught U.S. and women's history, developed community education programs, practiced oral history, and took up production of historical documentary. She produced the public television documentary Step by Step: Building a Feminist Movement, 1941-1977 and co-produced Creating Women's History: The Sophia Smith Collection.

Joyce Follet

From 2002 to 2010 Joyce directed the SSC's Voices of Feminism Oral History Project, an initiative to record oral histories and preserve personal papers and organization records that document the diversity of women's lives and the duration of women's movements. She is now developing a public history initiative that brings community organizers and students together with the SSC in collaborative efforts to integrate knowledge of women's past into campaigns for change today.

Joyce has taught in the American Studies Program and sits on its executive committee. Her current research and writing focus on the histories of women of color organizing for reproductive justice.
