The Sophia Smith Collection is open to the public free of charge, although contributions are always welcome. Because of their fragility and uniqueness, the materials do not circulate, but they are available for use in the reading room by anyone who can provide photo identification and is willing to abide by the regulations.

It is advisable to contact the SSC before visiting to alert the reference staff to your research topic. Then we can often provide finding aids, photocopies, and other information to help you plan your visit as well as inform you of any access restrictions.

Please note that access to some materials may not be immediate. For collections housed in remote storage we require 48 hours advance notice of your visit. See our list of collections and finding aids for restrictions on specific collections.

Researchers planning a visit may complete our reference forms ahead of time (please print the forms, fill them out, and bring them with you when you visit).

We are glad to make research appointments or host group or class presentations about the holdings and the use of primary sources.  Faculty are encouraged to request group orientation sessions when they plan assignments using the Sophia Smith Collection.

For more information see Reference Services and Access to Collections.

For information on how to apply for research grants and travel support, see Grants for Researchers.
