The Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) is used by the School to assist in determining eligibility for Federal Direct Student Loans and for School financial aid.

You may complete your FAFSA starting January 1, 2012.

Only the student section of the FAFSA form needs to be completed. You can complete your FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. If this is not possible, please contact the agency to find out what you should do. (Please see Special Note 4 regarding FAFSA Renewal Forms.)

Linking the FAFSA to your IRS tax information

The FAFSA allows applicants to access their IRS tax information and have it automatically inserted into the FAFSA. You will find a series of brief questions to determine if you are eligible for IRS data retrieval. An example of someone who is ineligible would include someone who amended his/her tax return or filed separately from his/her spouse.

The 2012-13 FAFSA will offer IRS data retrieval beginning February 12, 2012.

You should file your tax return as early as you are able to, followed by your FAFSA submission.

If your FAFSA is selected for verification by the Department of Education and you did not link it to the IRS data match, you will be required to resubmit your FAFSA; this time selecting the IRS data match. If you do not qualify for the IRS data match, you must request an official IRS tax transcript using Form 4506-T.

Please follow the instructions below to fill out your FAFSA.

Sections 1, 2 & 4

Complete the questions for student. If you are married, you must include your spouse's financial information even if you do not file a joint tax return.

Complete the financial section after completing your federal income tax return. Do not include School financial aid or educational loans as untaxed income. *See note above on IRS data retrieval.

Report all assets and savings information as of June 1, 2012.

Section 3

Do not complete parent section.

Section 5

Special Notes

  1. If you have not completed your tax return, you may still complete the FAFSA using estimated figures. When you file your tax return, you must then correct any income or tax data if it differs from the data originally reported to FAFSA. You may also use the IRS link to correct your tax deta.
  2. FAFSA will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR) when your application is processed.
  3. Any changes that you need to make on your FAFSA after your initial submission must be made directly through FAFSA, using your SAR form.
  4. If you receive a FAFSA Renewal Form you may complete this instead of the online form. Only complete one form.
  5. If you complete the form on line, follow the instructions and do not stop the process at the signature page—continue until you get a confirmation number. Print out this page to verify that FAFSA has received your application and to use for tracking purposes, if needed.
  6. In some cases, a FAFSA will not be considered complete unless it was linked to the IRS or can be verified against an official IRS Tax Transcript. It is therefore highly recommended that the link to the IRS option be used when submitting your FAFSA.
