All Smith web and file servers require a secure FTP connection. Core FTP LE is a file transfer program that allows you to securely transfer ("upload" and "download") files between your own computer and the webserver.

Faculty & Staff: Note that Core FTP LE is part of the standard software suite installed on Smith-owned Windows computers. It is typically found in the File Transfer folder on your Programs list, but if for any reason it is missing, follow the instructions below to download a free copy.

Downloading Core FTP LE

To download the program:

  1. Go to:

  2. When the Free FTP client software for Windows page appears, click on the words "Download Core FTP now!"

  3. On the Download options page, under Core FTP LE 2.x: free version, click an appropriate link to launch the download:

    1. If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, click either of the 64-bit links.
    2. If you have a 32-bit version of Windows, click either of the 32-bit links.

    3. If you're not sure which version you have, right-click the Computer icon on your desktop and choose Properties. The Properties window will indicate whether your operating system is 64-bit or 32-bit.

  4. In the File Download window, click Run.

  5. If you see a Security Warning window, click Run.

  6. In the Core FTP LE 2.x Installation window, keep clicking Next on each page to accept the default settings.  On the last page, click Finish.

  7. The Installer window will close automatically, and you should now see a new Core FTP LE icon on your desktop. Double-click on the icon to launch the program.

Connecting to a remote computer

When you double-click on the Core FTP icon, the Site Manager window will appear, as shown below.

  1. If you have saved any previous connections, the site name(s) will appear on the left.  You can double-click on a site name to initiate a connection.

  2. To create a new connection, enter the following:

    1. Site Name: Any name you choose for your new connection.

    2. Host/IP/URL: enter the name or IP address of the remote server you wish to connect to, e.g.

    3. Username: The username for your account on the specified remote server.
    4. Password: The password for your account on the specified remote server.

  3. In the Connection menu, select SSH/SFTP.

  4. Click on the Connect button. If prompted, re-enter your password. 

  5. If you see a Windows Firewall warning, choose Unblock.

  6. If the connection is successful, the main Core FTP window will open. 

  7. If the connection is not successful, the reason will appear in the Log pane. To try again, click on the Connect button.

    Sophia users: If you have trouble connecting, try unchecking the PASV setting.

Saving Your Starting Folder Locations

If you would like your connection to always start up in a particular local and/or remote folder in your directory structure, follow these steps:
  1. In the main Core FTP window, open the Sites menu and select Site Manager.

  2. In the Site Manager window, select your site and click on the Advanced button.

  3. In the Advanced Site Settings window, click on Directory/Folder category on the left, as shown below.

  4. Enter your preferred remote and local starting folder locations. (Note that you can leave the Remote Start Folder field empty if you are happy with the current Remote starting location.)

  1. Click OK to save your settings. Note that you can change your starting locations at any time.

Using Core FTP

First, locate the file you want to transfer.

In the main Core FTP window, the left pane shows your current position in the file structure of your own computer, and the right pane shows your current position in the file structure of the remote computer.

Each folder (also called a "directory") in the file structure may contain additional folders and files.

Use the following methods to navigate in either pane:

  • To move up in the file structure, select the folder represented as two dots (..), or click on the Up Directory button .

  • To move down in the file structure, double-click on the name of the folder you want to open.

  • Click on the Directory Tree button for a quick overview of the file structure.

  • Use the Delete button to delete unwanted directories and files.

Next, choose the file to be transferred, target location, and method of transfer.

Once you have located the file(s) you wish to transfer:

  1. Select the file.  Note that you can also select multiple files at once, or entire folders.

  2. In the other pane, navigate to the folder where you want to place a copy of the file(s), and open that folder.  
    Note: To create a new directory/folder, click on the Make Directory button.
  3. Choose the method of transfer:

    1. The default method is AutoMode, which is appropriate for most file transfers.

    2. Alternatively, you can use ASCII Mode to transfer plain-text files (not Word documents), or Binary Mode to transfer program files, document files, and/or image files.

  4. Click on one of the transfer buttons above the two panes:

    1. Use the left-pointing button to transfer (download) files from the remote computer to your computer.

    2. Use the right-pointing button to transfer (upload) files from your computer to the remote computer.

  5. This will begin the file transfer process, which you can follow in the status pane at the bottom of the screen. When the transfer is complete, all transferred files will be listed inside the folder where they were copied.

  6. When finished with all transfers, select the Exit button to quit.

Uninstalling Core FTP LE
  1. Click on the Start button, and select Settings then Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel window, double-click on Add or Remove Software.
  3. Scroll down the list and select Core FTP LE, then click on the Add/Remove button.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
