About Morris House

A charming, ivy-covered brick house that has a piano, a pool table and a large front porch complete with an old-fashioned swing.

Morris House, and its sister, Lawrence House, were built in 1891 in response to the rapidly growing enrollment at Smith at the end of the 19th century. The two houses have the distinction of being the first on campus to be named for alumnae. Morris House is named for Kate Morris, one of the first 11 graduates of Smith, who later went on to receive the first doctorate awarded by Smith in 1889.

Morris House, on Green Street, is conveniently located near the gymnasium, athletic fields and scenic Paradise Pond, as well as the central campus area.

Home Sweet Morris

With many students on campus living in single rooms, your creativity can run wild with decorating and making the space feel truly like your own. Take a glimpse inside the room of Cloud Osmond ’24 to see for yourself.

What is your favorite thing to do in your room?
I love having friends over! I love impromptu hangouts with my friends down the hall or in my house. I have such a cozy space that it’s nice to just have a space to hang out with my friends and talk for hours.

How did you gather the posters, plush animals, and other decorations?
I love getting art from museums I visit or work at! I also love being able to support small artists when I can, so much of the art on my walls comes from events or friends. I tend to pick up postcards of places I visit. Hanging up the little tickets stubs and pamphlets from everywhere I go quickly fills my walls. Many of the objects around my room come from loved ones and [remind me of] good memories.

What is your favorite part of your room?
I think one of my favorite parts is my window and the view. I get a lovely view of the sunset—and the afternoon light in my room is amazing.

What is your favorite stuffed animal?
I can’t have [just one] favorite, but my koala bear, Bingo, is one of my favorites! My best friend got us matching koala bears before I went to study away for a semester, their names are Bingo and Bongo.
