This report summarizes
the discussions and recommendations of the Childhood
Education Program Committee formed at the request of
the vice president for finance and administration and
the dean for academic development to provide suggestions
for reducing the college’s
subsidy to the program in light of the budget challenges
facing the campus. The committee was chaired by
Peter de Villiers (psychology, ACRA) and included faculty
members Dick Briggs (biology, CMP) Susan Etheredge (education
and child study), and Michael Thurston (English, CFCD)
and staff members Richard Myers and Lianne Sullivan-Crowley.
The committee met regularly through April and May, including
meetings with Center director Martha Lees, Campus School
principal Cathy Reid, and Al Rudnitsky from the education
and child study department. At the outset of its
deliberations, the committee also gave careful consideration
to the comparative review, discussion, and recommendations
from the report of the Smith Childcare Study Committee,
on which Susan Etheredge and Lianne Sullivan-Crowley
had served. This report is to be read in conjunction
with that previous report.
