Welcome to new members – introductions
The committee introduced themselves and it was noted that just two faculty members are returning from last year: Nicholas Howe and Katwiwa Mule. Two new members have been on CET in past years: Bob Buchele and Alan Marvelli. Glenn Ellis and Nicholas Russell will be serving on CET for the first time. New this year as well is Tom Laughner, the new Director of Educational Technology Services, who recently started at Smith after relocating from Notre Dame.
Herb provided the committee with a handout explaining the faculty charge to the CET as well as the membership list. The CET website is www.smith.edu/cet and the membership of this elected committee is also found at www.smith.edu/deanoffaculty/committees. Both of these sites are being updated with current committee information.
Herb explained that the routine discussions of the CET were on computer hardware and software standards and twice each year the committee invites initiative proposals from faculty and awards up to $100,000 in funding for initiatives.
Election of committee chairperson
The committee elected Bob Buchele to be chairperson this year. He will attend the ITCC meetings as the CET representative or make arrangements for another member to attend in his place.
Approval of April 24, 2006 Minutes
The minutes of the April 24, 2006 meeting were approved as written.
Herb introduced Tom Laughner once again to the committee. Tom said that the conversion to Moodle has gone very well. There are 400 active courses, an increase over where we were with Blackboard last year and a total thus far of 800 courses and labs listed. The ETS is working on the integration of add/drop and grades with the Banner system.
Tom also noted that 16 classrooms have been upgraded with equipment over the summer. Herb said that it is a goal of ITS to have all academic departments be wireless this fall. During the renovation of Baldwin wireless access was installed.
Report from Herb Nickles, Executive Director of ITS
Herb reported that registration went smoothly again this year. He said that there had been more communication in advance with new students. The information sheets on Smith computer standards had been mailed out early and as a result many more systems were purchased in advance and could be loaded with updates, MacAfee and Clean Client. The first weekend of registration 1100 new students logged on to Clean Client and only about 100 had to download updates before being allowed onto the network. Eric Brewer noted that the intrusion protection system in the Science Center was much improved since the implementation of Clean Client. Clean Client is only on student machines, not on faculty or staff machines yet.
Discussion topics for 2006-2007, subcommittees, and membership on subcommittees
The committee discussed possible topics for subcommittees this year and agreed to the following:
1) Learning spaces subcommittee: Glenn Ellis, Alan Marvelli, Eric Brewer, Eric Loehr, Tom Laughner, Nicholas Russell
2) Faculty development subcommittee: Katwiwa Mule, Bob Buchele, Nicholas Howe, Tom Laughner
3) Student development: technology literacy, basic skills necessary for graduation and first jobs: full committee participation
The fall initiative deadline is early November.
There being no further time for discussion, the meeting adjourned at 12:00 noon. The next meeting of CET will be October13th in Stoddard Hall G4 conference room.
Respectfully submitted,
Constance McGinn, recorder
