More... Poetry Reading and Q&A with Annie Boutelle The Poetry Center sponsors a reading by Smith’s own Annie Boutelle on Tuesday, October 18, at 7 p.m. in Stoddard Auditorium. Boutelle will discuss her work and the craft of writing at an informal Q&A session in the Poetry Center at 4 p.m. A faculty member in the English department, Boutelle is the founder of the Poetry Center. Otelia Cromwell Day 2005 Otelia Cromwell Day, an annual series named for the first African American to graduate from Smith, in 1900, will take place on Thursday, November 3, with a keynote address, "Abandoning a Successful Social Revolution: The Supreme Court and the Resegregation of the South," by Gary Orfield, Director, Harvard Civil Rights Project, at 1 p.m. in Sweeney Concert Hall, Sage. Several simultaneous workshops will follow, as will other events. The series begins on Friday, October 28, with a lecture, "Weapons of Mass Distraction," by Yvonne Freeman, executive director of SECME, an organization of minority engineers. More... Breaking Down Walls: Women & Islam Award winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy '02 returns to Smith on Wednesday, October 19, at 7 p.m. in Neilson Browsing Room, to share and discuss her latest work, "Women of the Holy Kingdom." This film, which aired on the Discovery Times Channel last March, looks at the contributions that Saudi women are making to their economy and society. All are welcome! Thank You for Not Walking on Chapin Lawn Students: Last year, a well-worn footpath widened across Chapin Lawn, irreversibly damaging tree roots, creating mud and dust, and costing several thousand dollars to restore grass there. Students, faculty and staff on the Campus Planning Committee, the Campus Sustainability Committee and in the Landscape Studies Program focused on the use of Chapin Lawn as a shortcut to the Campus Center, and posted signs to explain the damaging result. Everyone responded wonderfully by using the lawn for everything except going somewhere, and Chapin Lawn is now a great social space that everyone from babies to Frisbee players can enjoy, with no damage to the plants that make it so beautiful.
