Events Off Campus Special Benefit Film Screening for Haiti Relief Efforts Screenings at both 7 & 9 p.m. "Poto Mitan: Haitian Women, Pillars of the Global Economy"
Renée Bergan, co-director of the film, will introduce the film and take questions in a discussion facilitated by Carolyn Shread, Mount Holyoke College, after the screening
This new documentary (50 mins, NR), directed by Renée Bergan and Mark Schuller, gives a platform to five poor Haitian women whose voices would otherwise not be heard. Speaking from their own experience working in factories in Haiti and organizing grassroots campaigns, the women critique globalization and neo-liberal economic policies from the perspective of those it affects most immediately. The film shows how Haitian women are not only the poto mitan or center post of their families and communities, but also how they bear the weight of the global economy.
Special Admission: $10 per ticket - All proceeds will go to support critical medical needs and micro-financing of women in Haiti. More... Amherst Cinema

Events at Smith Electric Car Dreams- film screening Tentatively re-scheduled for March 3 THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED.
Will green energy and electric cars drive a new global climate change plan?
Denmark is setting a global example in creating clean power, storing it, and using it responsibly. Their reliance on wind power to produce electricity without contributing to global warming is well known, but now they're looking to drive the point home with electric cars. To do this, they've partnered with social entrepreneur Shai Agassi and his company Better Place.
In this film NOW investigates how the Danish government and Better Place are working together to put electric cars into the hands of as many Danish families as possible. The idea is still having trouble getting out of the garage here in America, but Denmark could be an inspiration.

Events Off Campus Exhibition: Greening The Valley: Sustainable Architecture in the Pioneer Valley Through May 9, 2010 For the first time in our region, a landmark exhibition on sustainable contemporary architecture and environmentally sensitive building practices will take place at The University Gallery, Fine Arts Center, UMass Amherst. This three-month long project will run from February 10 through May 9, 2010. The exhibition, its related lecture series, and the Green Lounge* are designed to deepen the public’s understanding and use of ‘green’ design, while demonstrating that the key elements of sustainability can be accessible to all.
Sustainability has become an accepted concept that applies to people from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds. It requires broad systemic thinking around critical economic, social, as well as environmental issues. The exhibition will address these issues, providing a springboard for thought-provoking questions, discussions, and commentaries. The specific focus on the Pioneer Valley will highlight our region and its forward looking communities
