Campus Center 102 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm Events Off Campus Lecture: Divine Wind: The History and Science of Hurricanes March 9, 2010 With Dr. Kerry Emanuel, Professor of Geosciences, MIT. Emanuel is a Professor of Atmospheric Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has been on the faculty since 1981, after spending three years as a faculty member at UCLA. Professor Emanuel's research interests focus on tropical meteorology and climate, with a specialty in hurricane physics. His interests also include cumulus convection, and advanced methods of sampling the atmosphere in aid of numerical weather prediction. He is the author or co-author of over 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers, and two books, including Divine Wind: The History and Science of Hurricanes, recently released by Oxford University Press and aimed at a general audience, and What We Know about Climate Change, published by the MIT Press. March 11, 2010 On current trends, by the middle of this century there will be no fish left in the sea. The consequences are terrifying: millions will die, because fish is a staple part of their diet. THE END OF THE LINE tells the story of how this has happened, who is to blame and what we can all do about it. Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009, the film, narrated by Ted Danson, has been called "The Inconvenient Truth about the Oceans". Matt Rigney, author of 'In Pursuit of Giants: One Man's Global Search for the Last of the Great Fish' will share his knowledge and experiences after the film. More... March 13, 2010 The Fair will feature live music by Brick by Brick, vendors, exhibits, a free raffle,childrens activities, along with snacks and beverages. Three workshop sessions will follow at 1:30, 2:35 and 3:40pm. There will be three separate workshops during each session; one each for adults, youth and families/kids. The workshops will feature family and adult gardening workshops led by Derek Christianson of Brix Bounty Farm and Alan Palm from the Allicance for Climage Education, will be leading workshops on using media to get your message out, youth leadership,and messaging through the arts. Other workshop topics will include native landscaping, green parenting, composting and much more. The event is FREE and open to the public. Boyce, professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts and director of the environment program of the Political Economy Research Institute. He is a member of the economic and allocation advisory committee to the California State Air Resources Board and Environmental Protection Agency. He also writes and works on climate policy and environmental justice on the national level. His most recent book is the edited volume, Reclaiming Nature: Environmental Justice and Ecological Restoration.
