This film deals with issues of the ethics of mountain top removal, MTR 101, and environmental justice. U.S.PIRG is a federation of state-based public interest advocacy groups which organizes around various environmental issues, from advocating for policies that will ensure the safe food and water, to researching the solutions to challenging issues like balancing the federal budget. U.S.PIRG is currently hiring over 100 graduating seniors to jump in and make a critical impact as a campus organizer or in our fellowship program.

Lecture: China’s Environment: Problems & Remedies--Pollution, Renewable Energy, Sustainability.

Come join us for an overview of (1) The major environmental problems facing China today: the burden of largest population on earth; the growing need for energy; geological threats; air and water pollution; waste disposal. And (2) some of the ways China is responding: city planning, reforestation, public transportation, waste reduction, development of renewable. Presented by Smith faculty George Robinson (Psychology) and Janice Moulton (Philosophy) who taught at Central China University in 1986-87 and since 2005, live at least one month of every year in China.

Exhibit Opening: Uneasy Bedfellows: Environmental Consequences of the U.S.-China Entanglement
Ongoing until March 13th
This poster exhibit explores the roles that America and other western developed countries play in China's environmental problems. We will look at pollution outsourcing by multinational corporations, electronic waste, and the efforts made by both the Chinese government and NGOs to improve the situation. Chinese specialties will be available for donation purchase with all proceeds going to a Chinese environmental NGO. The exhibit will last from Feb 28 to March 13 and will be open for viewing during CEEDS hours 8am to 4pm.

Lecture: Beyond Coal Campaign

Mark Kresowik of the Sierra Club and Drew Grande with Beyond Coal will talk about their organization's work to promote alternatives to coal-fired power plants that produce a range of problems nationally and locally. For example, air toxins such as mercury, arsenic, and lead are by-products of coal burning and known threats to public health, contributing to problems ranging from childhood asthma to cancer and birth defects. Coal-powered plants are also estimated to contribute up to 30% of the pollution leading to climate change.

Lecture: The Future of Water Sustainability in Massachusetts

The Environmental Institute and Massachusetts Water Resources Research Center presents, Kathleen Baskin, Director of Water Policy at the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA). She develops and implements state water policy on issues such as flow and habitat alteration, stormwater management, water quality, and water supply allocation. She is managing EEA’s climate change adaptation initiative, which is preparing a report for adapting to the predicted impacts of climate change and the MA Sustainable Water Management Initiative, which provides advice on how to protect and sustainably manage the water resources for habitat protection and economic development.

A spectacular array of crocuses, hyacinths, narcissi, irises, lilies and tulips provides an early glimpse of spring. The annual Spring Bulb Show is a long-standing Smith College tradition, dating back over 100 years. Ordinarily blooming at different times, some 5,000 bulbs are coaxed into blooming simultaneously. South African bulbs and other spring flowering plants add to the exotic flavor of the Show. Special evening hours on Mar. 11 and 18, 6-8 p.m.

Riverscaping: Rethinking Art, Environment, and Community

Thom Long, Assistant Professor of Architecture + Design at Hampshire College and Co-Director of the Five College Architectural Studies Program, will present on the 18-month interdisciplinary project, Riverscaping: Rethinking Art, Environment and Community, which is made possible by a grant to Five Colleges and is incorporated from the European Union’s “Getting to Know Europe” initiative. Led by the Five College Architectural Studies program, the project will support discussion among scholars, designers, scientists and planners here and in Hamburg, Germany, (designated Green City of the Year by the Union for 2011). Thom Long is a practicing architect and graphic/media designer, and is the founder and Creative director of visionLaboratory in Northampton. His work, in practice and theory, explores concepts of communication through and across various design disciplines, working on a broad range of projects including architecture, print and web design, corporate branding, film and multimedia, and interior design. He works collaboratively with a network of architects, artists, and designers on a wide range of international memorials, residential, and interior design projects. This is a part of the TEI Environmental Lecture Series.

Come see the webinar of New England Faculty Colloquium: Climate Change, Policy, and Energy Solutions presenting Alan F. Blumberg of the Stevens Institute of Technology and George Mead Bond Professor and Director of the Center for Maritime Systems. Learn about the work Stevens has been developing since 1997. Stevens is evolving a network of operational coastal ocean and estuary sensors that provide real-time observations of weather and ocean conditions throughout the New York/New Jersey (NY/NJ) Harbor Estuary, Hudson River, and NJ coastal waters. A high-resolution, now operational nowcast and forecast hydrodynamic model system has been added and refined since 2004. The region includes all of the “urban” waters of New York and New Jersey, out to the continental shelf break. NYHOPS (New York Harbor Observation and Prediction System) provides medium term (48hr), water level, wave, 3D currents, temperature, and salinity forecasts.
