Lecture and Discussion- 1493: The New World December 15, 2011 Columbus sailed to the Americas in 1492 "But it was Columbus' activities in the years that followed, says writer Charles C. Mann, that really created the New World. When Columbus crossed the Atlantic in 1492, his journey prompted the exchange of not only information but also food, animals, insects, plants and viruses between the continents." Christopher Columbus and his men brought domesticated animals and insects and diseases that did not exist outside Europe and which changed the face of America forever. There will be a discussion session for the book, in which you can participate with history teachers from the Springfield Public Schools, followed by a presentation by Charles Mann. The discussion session will start at 4:30 and go until 5:15. The presentation by Charles Mann will begin at 5:30. Neilson Browsing Room 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm
