WILLIAMS-MYSTIC MARITIME STUDIES PROGRAM is now accepting applications for the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters. Come spend a semester exploring the ocean with Williams-Mystic, an Ocean Studies program sponsored by Williams College and Mystic Seaport. We take to the open sea for ten days, hit the road on the West and Gulf Coasts, and explore the wonders of the Mystic Seaport Museum. Information on how to apply can be found on our website. Speaker Curt Ellis is probably best known as one of the film makers of King Corn and Greening of Southie, yet he has been involved in numerous other noteworthy projects. Curt is recognized as a leading voice in America’s food movement. As co-founder and Executive Director of the national service organization, FoodCorps, to recruit and organize young leaders and future farmers for a year of public service improving school food. Later this month he will be the keynote speaker at MOSES, the Midwest Organic & Sustainable Education Services conference in Wisconsin.

Film Screening: Pink Ribbons Inc.

Barbara Brenner--activist, founder of Breast Cancer Action, and Smith alumna-- is being honored with the awarding of a Smith Medal. In conjunction with her visit, we are holding a private screening of a new documentary, Pink Ribbons Inc., which explores the politics behind breast cancer, pink ribbon campaigns and the “breast cancer cause”. This is an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and community members interested in the intersection of public and environmental health, activism and feminist critique to come together for a stimulating evening. Join us for the first in CEEDS' workshop series called "Turning Your Grand Plans Into Reality." Clinical Herbalist and Licensed Acupuncturist William Siff will be speaking on the ins and outs of community healthcare and will teach about Goldthread Apothecary. Participants are invited to bring their own ideas to get input and discuss ways of moving their projects along. This could be anything from how to start your own business to how you help organize your community around an initiative or event. Snacks will be provided.

Charles Mann Lecture - "1493: Living in the Homogenocene"

Charles C. Mann, award winning and best-selling journalist and author has made history interesting by connecting all of the pieces and recounting how new biological worlds were created through trade and human interaction, just as sustainability conscientiously seeks to do to create greener campuses and communities now and a better world for future generations. He will talk about how the historic accounts in his books teach us lessons today about balancing economic growth with sustainable development. This event is open to the public.
