WILLIAMS-MYSTIC MARITIME STUDIES PROGRAM is now accepting applications for the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters. Come spend a semester exploring the ocean with Williams-Mystic, an Ocean Studies program sponsored by Williams College and Mystic Seaport. We take to the open sea for ten days, hit the road on the West and Gulf Coasts, and explore the wonders of the Mystic Seaport Museum. Information on how to apply can be found on our website. Film Screening: Pink Ribbons Inc.

Barbara Brenner--activist, founder of Breast Cancer Action, and Smith alumna-- is being honored with the awarding of a Smith Medal. In conjunction with her visit, we are holding a private screening of a new documentary, Pink Ribbons Inc., which explores the politics behind breast cancer, pink ribbon campaigns and the “breast cancer cause”. This is an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and community members interested in the intersection of public and environmental health, activism and feminist critique to come together for a stimulating evening. Speaker Curt Ellis is probably best known as one of the film makers of King Corn and Greening of Southie, yet he has been involved in numerous other noteworthy projects. Curt is recognized as a leading voice in America’s food movement. As co-founder and Executive Director of the national service organization, FoodCorps, to recruit and organize young leaders and future farmers for a year of public service improving school food. Later this month he will be the keynote speaker at MOSES, the Midwest Organic & Sustainable Education Services conference in Wisconsin.

Innovators in Sustainability: Edward Humes

The second lecture in this semester's "President's Alumni Speaker Series" which will bring Hampshire College alums involved in different aspects of sustainability back to campus so that students can see what it "means" to actually do this type of work. This talk is by Pulitzer Prize winning author Edward Humes, who will speak about his book "Force of Nature: The Unlikely Story of Wal-Mart's Green Revolution". (FPH is a 2 min walk from the bus stop and you can park anywhere on campus.)
