Exhibit: James Welling-Open Spave
January 31, 2013
This event starts on January 31 and ends May 3. The University Museum of Contemporary Art at UMass Amherst is pleased to announce an exhibition of work by the Los Angeles-based artist James Welling. This exhibition will focus on the photographer’s work in New England from 1970 to 2010. Included are Welling’s earliest experiments in photography, video, and watercolor, all harking back to his formative years in Connecticut. The exhibition concludes with his remarkable Glass House series (2006 – 2010). This architectural landmark by Philip Johnson in New Canaan, CT, became a laboratory for Welling’s ideas about transparency, reflectivity, and color. His recent videos, taken at the Glass House at different seasons of the year, will also be premiered in this exhibition. January 31, 2013—May 3, 2013, Tue/Wed/Thu/Fri 11:00 am-4:30 pm. CISA Farmer Panel: Looking Forward, Looking back

Changing Agriculture in the Pioneer Valley. What has the "local food movement" actually meant for farmers in the Pioneer Valley? As CISA enters its 20th anniversary year, we are looking back on how farming in the Valley has changed over the last generation, and how farmers have led and adapted to those changes. Local farmers Michael Docter of Winter Moon Farm, Nancy Hanson of the Hampshire College Farm Center, Nate L'Etoile of Four Star Farms, and Carolyn Wheeler of Wheel-View Farm will share their stories and talk about how their businesses have changed over the years, and what they see as the biggest opportunities and challenges facing them in the years to come. This panel discussion and the reception to follow are free and open to the public. CSA farmers will also be on hand during the reception to discuss their farms and share options.

A whole-systems approach toward major energy savings in a representative building on Campus with Ben Weil, the Extension Assistant Professor of Building Energy in the Building and Construction Technology program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Professor Weil teaches and conducts research in energy efficient building technology, policy and management. This lecture is the first in a 2 part lecture series "Designing for Occupants" brought to you by UMASS's Green Building Committee, a subcommittee of the Chancellor's Sustainability Committee.
