Field Station Fridays!
September 6, 2013
Join us for an introductory guided tour of Smith's Ada and Archibald MacLeish Field Station! Hike the trails, relax outside, or explore the newly opened environmental building. Space is limited. The van leaves from the annex road between Chapin House and the Campus Center at 12:30 p.m. Friday and returns from the MacLeish Field Station to Smith College at 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m.- depending on the day's participants. Seminar: Solutions to the Demise of the North American Prairie
September 1, 2013
with W. Carter Johnson, distinguished professor of ecology at South Dakota State University-Brookings. Renowned writer William Least Heat Moon described the American prairie as “the center of our national identity.” Shockingly, what little that remains of the tall grass prairie now is being plowed up to plant more corn and soybeans in response to record grain prices. This seminar documents the highs and lows of ecological farming by examining the challenges of grassland restoration and the search for new income streams to make prairie farming sustainable and attractive to producers.

Exhibition: Women and Food Project
September 3, 2013
September 3rd -30th. The photographic exhibit, by Sarah Plantanitis, features a dozen women, the majority from Western Massachusetts. Participants range from distinguished chefs, urban gardeners and cookbook publicists to comfort food makers and chocolatiers. Opening reception Saturday, September 14, 5-8 p.m.
