The van leaves from the annex road between Chapin House and the Campus Center at 12:30 p.m. Friday and returns from the MacLeish Field Station to Smith College at 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m.- depending on the day's participants. No, we don't know when Mountain Day will be, but when it is called we want you to celebrate with us! There are 2 ways to do so. You can: Explore the MacLeish Field Station (Come to the MFS and take a hike, explore the new building, pick apples, relax in our swing and much more. Cider and donuts willn be available from 10 a.m. until we run out) or join our farm and field bike ride (Leaves Chapin Lawn at 9 a.m., the group will ride to the MFS, break for cider and donuts then ride on to Quonquont Farm and back to campus through the farms of Hatfield. The ride is a hilly 35 miles, and it not for beginners, though there are turn off points for those who don't want to go the whole way.) Contact Sara Kirk with questions at x3352.

Seminar: Solutions to the Demise of the North American Prairie

with W. Carter Johnson, distinguished Professor of ecology, South Dakota State University-Brookings. Renowned writer William Least Heat Moon described the American prairie as “the center of our national identity.” Shockingly, what little that remains of the tall grass prairie now is being plowed up to plant more corn and soybeans in response to record grain prices. This seminar documents the highs and lows of ecological farming by examining the challenges of grassland restoration and the search for new income streams to make prairie farming sustainable and attractive to producers.

Lunchtime Discussion with Wendy Tremayne and Mikey Sklar

Join us for a lunchtime event with author Wendy Jehanara Tremayne and her partner Mikey Sklar. Ms. Tremayne wrote The Good Life Lab: Radical Experiments in Hands-On Living, the inspirational story of how she and Mikey ditched their careers in New York City to move to rural New Mexico, where they made, built, invented, foraged, and grew all they needed to live self-sufficiently. Alongside their personal story the book outlines the discovery of a fulfilling lifestyle that relies less on money and presents reasons for makers to share their innovations and ideas through open source and creative commons licenses. Wendy is the founder of the textile repurposing event Swap-O-Rama-Rama, which takes place in over 100 cities around the world. Mikey is a digital homesteader and open source hardware developer. Come listen to their stories and ask your questions. Lunch will be provided for the first 20 people.

Lecture: Where is Our Civic Imagination?
September 20, 2013
by acclaimed architect and activist Teddy Cruz, Professor of Public Culture and Urbanism at the University of California at San Diego. Professor Cruz is also a co-founder of the Center for Urban Ecologies (CUE). His work studies the cross-border flows of people, materials, and waste recycling between San Diego, California and Tijuana, Mexico. He has pioneered the development of an architecture and urban practice and pedagogy that emerge out of the particularities of this bicultural territory, integrating theoretical research and design production. Cruz has won international recognition and several prestigious awards for his research on the Tijuana-San Diego border, partnering with NGOs to recycle cross-border waste in affordable housing provision.

Lecture: The Politics of Sustainability

with Mukul Sanwal. Mr. Sanwal is a leading expert on climate change and sustainability. As Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Forests, he represented India in the negotiations leading to the Climate Change Convention, the Forest Principles and Agenda 21, and co-chaired the negotiation group that developed the Rio Declaration, in 1992. In 2008, Mr. Sanwal, Former Special Advisor to the UN FCC secretariat and visiting lecturer in the Department of Political Science at UMASS this semester. Mr. Sanwal's lecture and visiting appointment are generously supported by a grant from the Five Colleges, Inc. and organized by the Department of Political Science.

Lecture: Exploring Regenerative Capacities in Urban Morphologies of Mill Towns

with Kaynar Rohloff, PhD, AIA Assoc., and a Five College Mellon Fellow and a Visiting Professor with specialization on environmental design at Mount Holyoke College. Dr. Rohloff’s work investigates the ways in which urban and landscape design promote livable and healthy neighborhoods with social cohesion and diversity of uses. This talk explores opportunities and challenges presented in historic mill town morphologies for regeneration of economic and social capital. The discussion features a spatial analysis of Holyoke MA USA, and observations of other historic mill towns such as Lowell and Maynard MA. This is part of the Ervin Zube Lecture Series sponsored by the UMASS Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning.
