Join us on one of our regular trips to Smith's Ada and Archibald MacLeish Field Station! Hike the trails, relax outside, or explore the newly opened environmental building. Space is limited. The van leaves from the annex road between Chapin House and the Campus Center at 12:30 p.m. Friday and returns from the MacLeish Field Station to Smith College at 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m.- depending on the day's participants. Each fall as colors fade outdoors, a riot of color erupts indoors in the Lyman Conservatory at the Botanic Garden of Smith College. While not as widely known as the Spring Bulb Show, this autumnal display is even more spectacular, with vibrant over sized blooms reaching 8 inches across, floral walls of color, and chrysanthemums overflowing the greenhouses.

Lecture: Metaphors for Sustainability

with Brendon Larson, Associate Professor & Associate Chair, Undergraduate Environment and Resource Studies, University of Waterloo, Ontario. The lecture will explore if the metaphors used in environmental science help us along the path of sustainability. Prof. Larson will draw on examples from current environmental science to examine both the role of metaphors in scientific thought and their function at the interface between science and society.

with Frances Moore Lappé, author or co-author of 18 books including the three-million copy Diet for a Small Planet. Her most recent work is EcoMind: Changing the Way We Think to Create the World We Want, winner of a silver medal from the Independent Publisher Book Awards in the Environment/Ecology/Nature category. She is the recipient of the Right Livelihood Award (a.k.a. the "Alternative Nobel") and is the co-founder of three organizations, including Oakland based think tank Food First and, more recently, the Small Planet Institute, a collaborative network for research and popular education seeking to bring democracy to life.

Film screening: Gasland II

Fracking -- the controversial method of gas drilling -- has polluted drinking water and made families sick across the country. Gas deposits were recently identified in the Pioneer Valley, which means that fracking could come to our region. Gasland 2, the new documentary from Josh Fox, shows the damage that fracking has done to communities across the country, and describes how powerful oil and gas corporations have used their political muscle to evade environmental and public health regulations. After the movie, we'll discuss what we can do to keep fracking out of Western Massachusetts. With fracking exempt from so many of the nation's key environmental laws, it's up to us to make sure that our communities are protected. Why Aren't More Women in Science?

We will examine the differences among the sciences and the assumptions people often make to answer this broad and complex question. Does society actively or passively discourage women from pursuing careers in science? Can bias and discrimination explain the difference? Are there biological differences in ability, personality, or career preferences? Anecdotal explanations abound, but I will present some of the more compelling evidence that supports or refutes the various arguments you have likely heard, and discuss what we do at Mount Holyoke to encourage the participation of women in the physical sciences.

Food for Thought: Expanding Northampton Local Food

ENX 301 students will give a presentation of their final capstone project: synthesizing four surveys of Northampton's food system, which were conducted under the direction of Keep Farming Northampton. Consumers, restaurants, institutions, and farmers were surveyed in an effort to determine the specific barriers faced by each of these groups. Students will present their analysis of the surveys and make recommendations for increasing the use of local foods within the Northampton area.

Alan Weisman, author of The World Without Us, traveled to more than 20 countries to ask what experts agreed were probably the most important questions on Earth-and also the hardest: How many humans can the planet hold without capsizing? How robust must the Earth's ecosystem be to assure our continued existence? Can we know which other species are essential to our survival? And, how might we actually arrive at a stable, optimum population, and design an economy to allow genuine prosperity without endless growth? Books will be available for purchase.
