Lecture: From Earth Day to Tomorrow: Environmentalism in the Digital Century

by Denis Hayes, president and CEO of the Bullitt Foundation, a Seattle-based environmental foundation. A seasoned veteran of many legislative, cultural, and courtroom battles over the years, and the author of numerous books and articles, Denis Hayes is probably still best known for having been National Coordinator of the first Earth Day when he was 25. Internationally, Denis is recognized for having expanded Earth Day, the world’s most widely observed secular holiday, to more than 180 nations. For his work and advocacy Denis has received the national Jefferson Medal for Outstanding Public Service as well as the highest awards bestowed by numerous organization, including the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation, the Natural Resources Council of America, the Global Environmental Facility, and the Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility. He has served on dozens of governing boards, including those of Stanford University, the World Resources Institute, Children Now, the American Solar Energy Society, and Greenpeace. Look magazine selected Hayes as one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th Century. The event is sponsored by the Smith College Center for the Environment, Ecological Design and Sustainability and Five Colleges, Inc. with support from the Thoreau Foundation.
