Ross Gay Poetry Reading

Ross Gay's third and most recent collection, "Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude," has placed him in the spotlight of the poetry world, having won the prestigious Kingsley Tufts and the National Book Critics Circle awards, and named finalist for the National Book Award in Poetry and the NAACP Image Award. An ardent gardener, Gay has said, “Almost everything that interests me is in the small moments, the very precise and nearly invisible moments that, upon meditation, have to do with everything.” Q&A at 4pm in the Poetry Center open to the Smith community. Evening reading free & open to the public.

Plan Health: Designing Healthy Communities at A.P.E. Gallery

This year, students from landscape studies (LSS 389) and engineering (EGR 422) are collaborating on a joint project with the Office of Planning and Sustainability on the design and siting of small, temporary parks and parklets in downtown Northampton. Some of the students' work will be on display at the APE Gallery from December 4-9 as part of a broader initiative called Plan Health: Designing Healthy Communities. The reception on Tuesday, December 6 (5:30-7:30 PM) will feature the parklets in particular and conversation with the LSS and EGR students. This collaboration is sponsored in part by the Smith College Design Thinking Initiative and Landscape Studies program.

This talk will be given by James Manwell, UMass. Prof. Manwell researches advances in technology for wind energy and is the Director of the UMass Wind Energy Center.

Environmental Concentration Capstone Project Presentations

Community partnerships project presentations

This semester, students in the Introduction to GIS class have collaborated with the Kestrel Land Trust, Franklin Land Trust, and Mass Audubon on projects to define food deserts in Chicopee, map the Forever Farmland conservation initiative, map trail networks in Florence's Sawmill Hills, map floodplain forests near Arcadia, assess impacts of cleared forest land in Williamsburg, and catalog Franklin Land Trust's conservation efforts over their 30 year history. We would be honored to have you join us to celebrate this work with food, drink, and short presentations by the student groups!
