Mary Berry and Bill McKibben in Conversation

Mary Berry is the Executive Director of The Berry Center and a leader in the movement for sustainable agriculture. A well-known advocate for the preservation of rural culture and agriculture, she is currently working to reconnect cities with landscapes around them. Bill McKibben is an environmentalist and author who frequently writes about global warming, alternative energy, and the risks associated with human genetic engineering. He is also the founder of 350.org, the first planet-wide, grassroots climate-change movement, and is a fellow at the Post-Carbon Institute. Join a live, virtual conversation moderated by Jodie Evans, co-founder and co-director of CODEPINK. Mary and Bill will reflect on previous talks at the Center given current political, economic, and social realities, with comments on each other’s work. Part 1: What’s in a Map?

This workshop introduces GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and exercises spatial thinking through critiquing the abundance of election maps available – what are the ingredients and motivations that go into making such a map, and how can we be conscientious map consumers? Black Faces, White Spaces: Christian Cooper, John Muir, & (Re)Claiming a Green World

Christian Cooper. George Floyd. Removal of Confederate Statues. Renaming of institutions. Reparations. Systemic Racism. What’s environment got to do with it? How do we meet this moment? Drawing from her book, Black Faces, White Spaces, her relationships “in the field,” and her lived experience, Dr. Carolyn Finney will explore the complexities and contradictions of our past as it relates to green space, race, and the power to shape the places we live in our own image. By engaging in “green” conversations with black people from around the country, she considers the power of resistance and resilience in the emergence of creative responses to environmental and social challenges in our cities and beyond.
