Smith Community Event Series Tea-- Becoming Carbon Neutral: Smith's Geothermal Energy Plan

Smith College is committed to being carbon neutral by 2030 and addressing heating and cooling is key to our success. Attend one (or more) of the campus community events we have planned this week to learn more about our plans for achieving that goal using geothermal energy, renewable electricity, operational transformations, and community engagement. These events are open to all staff, faculty and students. Bring your questions! Coffee, tea and light refreshments provided. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free options available. Questions? Ask Me Anything Featuring Ali Carter

Ali is the Director of Environment and Wildlife Policy Offshore. In this role she helps lead association and industry efforts to resolve wildlife and environmental permitting policy challenges facing offshore wind at federal and state levels. Key issues in her portfolio include offshore wind leasing and permitting, federal regulatory processes, environmental and wildlife science and research, and multiple-use compatibility including commercial fishing, among others. Previously, Ali was Deputy Director of ocean policy at the Center for American Progress. She has worked in the past as a congressional staffer for Senator Jeff Merkley, in fisheries management field positions for the California and Oregon Departments of Fish and Wildlife, and as a NOAA certified fisheries observer in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska. Ali earned her bachelor’s degree in marine biology and environmental science and policy from California State University Long Beach. Outside of work, she enjoys being active outdoors and spends most of her weekends hiking, camping, disc golfing, open water swimming, and outrigger canoeing. Climate Action: Inspiring Change
May 16, 2022
How can we transform the climate crisis into hope for our shared future? Peabody Essex Museum’s timely exhibition brings together dynamic contemporary art, hands-on experiences and inspiring works by youth artists to help guide us toward making a difference for the planet. On view in the Dotty Brown Art & Nature Center, this exhibition highlights local and regional climate issues and opportunities. Most of the 30 featured artists are based in New England — including works by 10 award-winning youth who participated in the Climate Hope: Transforming Crisis international student art contest in 2020 organized by Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs. The exhibition will be on view April 16, 2022 through June 25, 2023. Museum hours are Thursdays, Saturdays & Sundays 10 am–5 pm and Fridays 10 am-7 pm.

Webinar: Tribal & Indigenous-Based Climate Adaptation Priorities in the NorthEast

This webinar will provide an overview of climate adaptation priorities for Tribal Nations and Indigenous Peoples in the Northeast. A complete description will be available in the spring. Speaker Casey Thornbrugh serves as a liaison between Tribal Nations, United South and Eastern Tribes Inc. (USET), and the Northeast and Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Centers to provide current climate science information, identify climate research needs and priorities, and offer climate adaptation planning support to Tribal Nations. Casey is a citizen of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and has an educational background in geography and climate science. Prior to joining USET, Casey worked as the Director of the Natural Resources Department for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Link to the talk is below:
