How to Stop Objectifying Trees: Thoughts on Economy, Culture, and Forests

an online event with Katharina Linne, and the first event in To Understand a Tree, an Arts Afield public event series curated by Gina Siepel, MacLeish Field Station Artist-in-Residence. Katharina Linne’s research investigates new possibilities for the economic valuation of trees and forests in Europe, advocating for an incorporation of their multifaceted ecological value into economic thinking. Her presentation will explore ways that ingrained cultural stories shape understandings of sustainable forestry, human relationships to trees, and dominant economic paradigms. Katharina examines the historical development of Christianity in Europe, the impacts it had on the relationship of humans to nature, and the ways that shaped the development of forestry. Paradise Pond Sediment Workshop

There has been a dam on the Mill River at the Paradise Pond location since 1665! At this workshop, participants will discuss progress in developing techniques for sediment release from the pond and questions associated with the removal of run-of-the-river dams. Speakers include Gary Hartwell, Project Manager, Smith College Facilities Management; Ethan Nadeau, Executive Dir., Biodrawversity LLC.; Robert Newton, Exec. Dir. The Northeast Organic Farming Association/Massachusetts Chapter hosts its annual winter conference with keynote speaker Ira Wallace, Author and worker/owner of the cooperatively managed Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.
