Steinem's letter to 'The Saturday Evening Post'September 20, 1956After a childhood of insecurity and of nursing her depressive mother, Steinems years at Smith College were a safe haven. She spent two years in India on the Chester Bowles Asian Fellowship after graduating magna cum laude from Smith in 1956. It was in India that she learned grass roots organizing skills from followers of Gandhi. Steinem supplemented her fellowship and launched her professional career as a journalist by writing articles about a visitor's view of India for Indian newspapers, and also for The Sophian. Despite Steinems efforts, The Saturday Evening Post did not commission a similar article. Gloria Steinem Papers Back to Home |
