The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby was Dickens' third novel, first published in monthly parts from April 1838 to October 1839 and first issued in book form, in one volume, in 1839. The illustrations in the novel were done by "Phiz" (H.K. Browne), but the frontispiece portrait is by Daniel Maclise (1806-1870). Maclise was an Irish-born painter of historical and literary subjects. This portrait, commissioned by the publisher for this volume, was one of several Maclise made of Dickens.
