[Herbert L. Bodman to Theodora Dunham, 20 November 1917]

My dear Theo,

I liked the time best of all when we sat by the boat with your dog and friend dog about us and listened to the wind in the trees and the little waves on the beach. You gave me a glimpse my darling of a love which I have read about and of which other people have spoken but which it never occurred to me I should be lucky enough to receive. Other people have pretended to like me but there have been none of whom I suspected of such generosity. It doesn't seem as if it could have ever have come to the great majority of men or they would never behave as so many men do. It is quite late and I can only say a very little of what is in my mind but we will hope for other equally great hours, not in the Officers House. It is a miserable place isn't it? I didn't really dare kiss you good bye today, didn't quite dare trust myself to take only an Officers House kiss and would like now to do as I did when a child and send you large O's at the bottom of the letter, only the paper is not big enough.

Herbert
