“Abundant Life To All”:
The Y.W.C.A. of the U.S.A.

This exhibit began its life as part of our celebration of the Sophia Smith Collection's 65th Anniversary in 2007.  The items here are a tiny sample of the riches housed in the 1,132 boxes that make up the historical records of the YWCA of the U.S.A.  Faced with the daunting task of somehow representing the wide-ranging work of this path-breaking organization, I decided to focus on materials related to the themes of the speakers at the SSC's 65th Anniversary Conference.

Funding for processing the records came from the National Historical Records and Publications Commission, a bequest from longtime YWCA Archivist Elizabeth Downe Norris (Smith '36), and the Studwell Fund.

– Maida Goodwin, YWCA Project Archivist
