Last September, a group of Smith staff, faculty and graduate student quilters began meeting once a week in the Kahn Institute's Colloquium Room for quilting and conversation.
Since then, they've come to call themselves, logically, the Smith College Quilting Group.
On Thursday, May 1, the group's members will display their quilted works during an exhibition in the Kahn Institute, located on the third floor of Neilson Library, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
From noon to 2 p.m., the quilters will answer questions at the exhibition. Refreshments will be provided.
Most of the group members had never quilted before joining, says Cynthia Button, administrative coordinator for the Kahn Institute, and a charter member of the group. Heather Williams, the Wilson Post-doctoral Fellow in Afro-American studies, "shared her inspirational talent and her beautiful 'scraps' of cloth with the quilters," Button says.
On display in the exhibition will be the works of Button, Williams and other group members Adrianne Andrews, college ombudsperson; Catherine Adams, residence coordinator in King House; Suzanne Chambers, senior teaching aide at the Campus School Fort Hill preschool; Naomi Sturtevant, interlibrary loan specialist; Rene Heavlow, project and publicity coordinator with the Kahn Institute; Tracy Vaughn, lecturer in Afro-American studies; and Alesia McFadden, a graduate student at UMass.
"All of us truly treasure our quilting time together," says Button, "especially considering the wonderful new friends that we have made through these weekly gatherings."
