Smith Convocation September 4
Smith students and faculty will welcome Smith’s tenth president, Carol Christ, at opening convocation on Wednesday, September 4, at 7:30 p.m. in John M. Greene Hall. With the usual collection of crazy headgear and outlandish costumes, students will chant, stomp, and shout out welcomes to each other and to the new president, initiating her in traditions that mark the beginning of each academic year.
Although it is sure to be raucous at the beginning, the crowd undoubtedly will settle down and listen attentively to what Smith’s new leader has to say and to the others who will speak: Lindsey Watson ’03, president of the Student Government Association, who will make her first all-college appearance and Dean of the College Maureen Mahoney, who will announce student prize winners from last spring as well as the recipient/s of the 2002 Arthur Ellis Hamm Prize. The Hamm prize is presented annually to the sophomores who achieved the highest academic records during their first year at Smith. The Smith College Glee Club, conducted by Jonathan Hirsh, will provide a musical interlude with a rendition of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is My Land.”
