As thousands of students
flee the Smith campus this week to head for their respective
Thanksgiving festivities (or other holiday pastimes), a couple
hundred students from 15 regional colleges and universities
will move in.
Pachanga 2002, the East Coast
Chicano/a Student Forum, will take place from Wednesday through
Sunday, November 27-December 1.
The annual event, which always
takes place during Thanksgiving break, is a student forum
for Latino and Latina students attending institutions in the
Eastern United States. About 200 students from Smith, Mount
Holyoke, Amherst, Barnard, Dartmouth, Princeton, Wellesley
and several other colleges and universities will participate.
This year’s conference
is titled “Nosotras en el Norte, Nuestra Gente en el
Otro Lado, y la Historia que nos Une: A History of Foreign
Borders, Not Foreign People.”
After registering and settling
in to Smith housing on November 27, the students will begin
a series of workshops on November 28, such as Chicanismo 101,
“a look at the historical context and the current use
of the term chicana/o,” and Borders and Identity.
In the evening, a performance
by Ballet Mexico Lindo will take place at the Northampton
Council of the Arts, followed by a formal fiesta.
Similar workshops and performances
will take place throughout the following two days before a
Sunday morning checkout.
By the time Smith students return
on Sunday, December 1, the conference will be concluded.
The student forum is sponsored
and hosted by Nosotras de Smith College.
