With its state-of-the-art fitness machines and wide-open, light-filled workout space, Smiths new Olin Fitness Center is a showcase facility, says Lynn Oberbillig, director of athletics.
We wanted this to be a showcase, she says. I dont know any health club that can offer what we do with the atmosphere that we can offer. Students can walk in here and say, Wow, this is better than anything Ive ever had. Its just incredible.
The Olin Fitness Center, a 4,800-square-foot, glasswalled, skylit facility constructed between Scott and Ainsworth gyms, will open to the Smith community on Monday, January 5. Available for physical workouts will be 33 new pieces of aerobic equipment, including treadmills, ellipticals and upright and recumbent LifeCycles, each with its own television; 40 new weight machines; and extensive free-weight equipment. The facility can accommodate about 100 people working out simultaneously.
The $4 million fitness center was made possible by a gift from the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Foundation in honor of Barbara Olin Taylor 54 and Judy Olin Higgins 58.
The attractive, angular building was designed by the Boston-based architectural firm Leers Wienzapfel Associates.
The Olin Fitness Center will celebrate its inauguration on Thursday and Friday, February 19-20. LPGA professional golfer Suzy Whaley, who participated in last summers mens Greater Hartford Open, beating or tying the scores of six male pros, will deliver a keynote address on February 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Ainsworth Gym. She will discuss the role of sports in womens academic and career success. Her talk is sponsored by Oppenheimer Funds, Inc.
On February 20, a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the facility will be preceded by a daylong Fitness, Health and Wellness Fair in Scott Gym, featuring exhibition booths and hand-on clinics on healthy cooking, strength building, massage, weight machines usage and cholesterol testing, to name a few. The facility dedication, with remarks delivered by President Carol Christ and special guests, will take place in Scott Gym at 4:30 p.m.
Also, in conjunction with the fitness center opening, a photo exhibition, Game Face: What Does a Female Athlete Look Like? will be on display in the pool mezzanine area from February 16 through March 1. The exhibition is sponsored by MassMutual.
