Cancels Flu Clinic, Offers Excess Vaccine to City
Due to a national shortage in
the supply of flu vaccine, Smith College Health Services has
canceled its annual flu clinic scheduled for October 27, and
adopted recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (an office of the federal Department of Health
and Human Services) in rationing vaccines this fall.
Flu vaccine distribution will be offered to those most in
need. For a list of guidelines on people eligible for the
vaccine, consult www.smith.edu/health/fluvaccineupdate.html.
Meanwhile, Health Services has arranged to donate its excess
doses of vaccine to the City of Northampton’s Department
of Health. The city had ordered all of its vaccine supply
for the year (650 doses) from the Liverpool plant of the American
pharmaceutical company Chiron Corp., the same plant from which
the U.S. government ordered the bulk of its vaccine doses.
That plant’s license has been revoked by the British
government following questions over quality-control issues.
