Writer Fried Publishes Second Collection
 The
poems in a recently released collection, My Brother is
Getting Arrested Again, by Daisy Fried, the Grace Hazard
Conkling Writer-in-Residence at Smith, are rife with unflinching
emotion, poignantly alive with human complications and vividly
lyrical, according to the reviews of her renowned contemporaries.
“Daisy Fried’s
poetry is fluid and quicksilver as life seen close up,”
remarks author Joyce Carol Oates.
“Her poems
are mainly attempts to provide a complete and actual emotional
experience,” comments poet/critic Jordan Davis about
Fried. “They have recognizable settings -– a bedside
visit, a department party -– and a consistently inconsistent
speaker keeping things going from poem to poem. She seems
to care not at all about poetry’s usual rubrics and
categories for evaluation.”
My Brother
is Getting Arrested Again is Fried’s second published
collection. The author of She Didn’t Mean to Do
It (2000), which won the prestigious Agnes Lynch Starrett
Poetry Prize, Fried has also won the Cohen Award for poetry
from Ploughshares, a Pushcart Prize, and the Leeway
Award for Excellence in poetry. Fried, who was recently awarded
a Guggenheim Fellowship, was a Hodder Fellow in poetry at
Princeton University last year.
Like the poems
in She Didn’t Mean to Do It, those in Fried’s
new collection speak from a street-smart, urban stance that
simultaneously prods and mollifies the complicated experience
of modern life. Alternatively humorous and serious, the poems
are set in Philadelphia, Paris and New Jersey, and address
a swath of high-temperature issues, including sex, politics,
family warfare, married life, and love.
The book, which
was published this year by University of Pittsburgh Press,
was a finalist for the 2005 James Laughlin Prize.
Fried’s
poems have appeared in many literary publications, including
American Poetry Review, Antioch Review,
Ploughshares, TriQuarterly, Threepenny
Review and Yale Review.
My Brother is Getting Arrested Again is available
locally at Amherst Books and at Broadside Bookshop on Main
Street in Northampton. Fried will give a reading from her
new book at Broadside Bookshop on April 25.
