Another Record for Smith Fulbrights

For the fifth straight year, Smith College has surpassed its own impressive record with 17 students receiving Fulbright Fellowships in 2006, upping last year’s record of 14 recipients.

The Fulbright award is a highly coveted scholarship given annually by the U.S. Department of State to support student projects and academic endeavors abroad. The Fulbright student scholarship, which was named after Senator J. William Fulbright, is intended for recent bachelor’s degree recipients, and master’s and doctoral candidates, as well as young professionals and artists.

The Fulbright program is the largest international exchange program offered in the United States, operating in more than 140 countries.

“The Fulbright is a wonderful fellowship,” says Donald Andrew, fellowships adviser, “because it is the perfect self-designed year abroad after graduation where young adults are ambassadors in addition to being researchers, teachers or students, or for undertaking other projects such as community service.”

Smith’s Fulbrighters—12 ’06 graduates and five alumnae—join 24 other students at the college who received competitive scholarships this year.
