Center
for Sexuality and Gender to Open
The college’s
new Resource Center for Sexuality and Gender will officially
open on Monday, March 13, with a brief reception featuring
talks by President Carol T. Christ and Naomi Miller, director
of institutional diversity, from 3:30 to 4 p.m. in the center.
Due to space limitations, the reception is by invitation only.
From 6 to 9 p.m.,
however, the center will welcome the Smith community to stop
in with an open house and “dessert drop-in” at
the center, located in the basement of Wesley House.
The Resource Center
for Sexuality and Gender, which was constructed last fall,
is intended to provide support and information for people
in the Smith community seeking to explore and clarify issues
around gender and sexuality, as well as class, race and other
social identities. The center will provide educational programming
and activities in support of that exploration, according to
the mission statement.
Also on March
13, from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. in Neilson Browsing Room, poet,
playwright and activist Letta Neely will read her work as
part of the center’s opening. Neely, who was named Best
Local Author 2001 in a Boston Phoenix reader’s
poll, is the author of two collections of poems, Juba
and Here. She has twice been a Lambda Literary Awards
finalist for lesbian poetry and has been an advocate for anti-homophobia
civil rights.
