This large
Javanese Buddha sculpture from the late 8th or early
9th century is on extended loan to the Smith College
Museum of Art from a private collection. The sculpture
is from the period of the Sailendra Dynasty of central
Java. The sculpture probably represents Amitabha Buddha,
the Buddha of the western direction and one of the five
cosmic Buddhas. It is carved from the dark volcanic
stone typical of central Java. |
