Professor Lecture Series
Richard Millington, the Sylvia Dlugasch
Bauman Professor in American Studies, and a professor of English language
and literature, will kick off this year’s series of lectures by
professors who have been appointed to chaired professorships in recent
years.
All four lectures in the series will take place at 4:30 p.m. in Seelye
201, and are free and open to the public.
Millington’s talk, on Monday, Feb. 19, will address “American
Literature and the Invention of Leisure.”
“The lecture is about the emergence of a distinctive idea of
middle-class leisure that emerges in the earlier 19th century,” describes
Millington, “a conception that shapes the work of writers like
Hawthorne and Thoreau, dominates the cultural landscape later
in the 19th century, and ultimately gives us our present idea of the
liberal arts college.”
Millington was appointed as a chaired professor July 1, 2003.
On Monday, March 12, Linda
Jones, the R. B. Hewlett ’40 Professor
of Engineering, will speak on “Nanostructure in a Materials
World: Boron Rich Carbon Nanotubes and Fibers.” Jones began
at Smith on July 1, 2005, as the director of the Picker Engineering
Program.
Mary Harrington, the Tippit
Professor in Life Sciences, and a member of the psychology department,
will speak on April 16 on “Illuminating
the Circadian Clock.”
Harrington, who joined the Smith faculty in 1987, was appointed a
chaired professor in 2005.
The final lecture in the
series will be given by Marilyn Schuster, the Andrew W. Mellon Professor
in the Humanities, on April 30. Her talk is titled “The Ladder,
Rung by Rung: Assimilation or Resistance?”
Schuster became a chaired professor on July 1, 2003.
