THE BASICS:
What do you do at Smith?
I'm senior associate
director of admission.
How many years
have you been at the college?
It will be eight years
this August, not counting four student years way back in
the ’80s.
What is your busy season?
Fall is pretty crazy
but January through March are definitely the busiest -- it's
all application reading all the time!
NOW THE FUN STUFF:
Who gets the most face
time with you?
My colleagues, especially
Deb Shaver, whose office is three steps from mine. She has
this uncanny way of interpreting my every laugh, groan and
sigh .
What are you
reading now?
Maximum
City: Bombay Lost and Found by Suketu Mehta.
Who are your
role models?
Mrs. Giddings,
my mean eighth-grade English teacher. She's
a grammar guru and taught me everything I know! Smithies
are a constant source of inspiration. I wish I were
as smart, passionate and together in college.
If you suddenly had two
hours of free time, what would you do?
Go for a long walk
and end up at Osaka for sushi.
What is your
favorite wall hanging at home?
Years ago, my sister
embroidered a picture of a bear sitting with a cup of coffee
who is saying, "I'm a bear until I've had
my coffee." She is dead-on. That's why I drink my coffee
before I come to work.
What annoys the heck
out of you?
People who aren't on
time. I grew up in a family where you showed up early so
even a little late is irritating.
If you could
live during any period in time and in any place -- when
and where?
Life has gotten better
the older I've become -- 2009 or 2010 sounds
about right.
Who does the work around your abode?
Karen and her iPod.
Is there any
time in your life you wish you could do over?
I have no regrets but
I could have had more fun in high school.
What
did you do before you came to Smith?
I worked in admission
offices at three other colleges.
What single piece of
advice would you give to graduating Smithies?
Embrace all that life
has to offer, even the tough stuff. |
