Noteables Host A Cappella
Fest
The Noteables, one of Smith’s leading a cappella groups, will host this year’s Silver
Chord Bowl, the enormously popular a cappella festival featuring some of the nation’s top
collegiate singing troupes.
The Silver Chord Bowl, which will take place on Sunday, February
4, at 2 p.m. in John M. Greene Hall, kicks off Four Sundays in February, the Northampton
Arts Council’s
annual performance series.
The Noteables will be joined on stage by the New York University
N’Harmonics, a musical
rule-breaking co-ed group that stretches the conventional a cappella repertoire;
Effusion from McGill University in Montréal; the Boston University Dear Abbeys, the school’s
top all-male group that always brings high energy; the Yale University Whim 'n Rhythm,
a group of seven women who have become one of the country’s premier female troupes; the
Bear Necessities from Brown University, an all-male group that sports suspenders
and sings the classic pop tunes; and Amherst College’s Zumbyes, a jazzy group that emphasizes
fun, humor and smooth sounds.
With five albums recorded, another on the way, and 20 years of performing experience, Smith’s
Noteables fits aptly on an afternoon program of vocal power, sans instrumentation.
Also as part of the Four Sundays series, Música Jíbara,
Mountain Music of Puerto Rico, will feature two bands on Friday, February 9, 9:30-10:30
a.m., in John M. Greene Hall, for students at Northampton High School and John F.
Kennedy Middle School. Grammy Award nominees Ecos de Boirinquen will be joined on
stage by El Grupo Rumba Caribe, the next wave of Puerto Rican stars. Some 300 tickets
are available to Smith students for this concert.
Música Jíbara will also perform on Sunday, February
11, at 2 p.m. at the Academy of Music. Tickets are $10 in advance; $12
at the door. Advance tickets may be purchased by contacting the Northampton Center
for the Arts at (413) 587-1269. A private meet and greet with the band and Smith
community members will follow the concert at the Smith College Club.
“This year we are especially grateful to Smith College,” says Bob Cilman, director
of the Northampton Arts Council. “We are using John M. Greene Hall twice and the college
is the major sponsor for both the Música Jíbara and Rai events. The funds raised
from this series are distributed to artists in the spring round of arts lottery grants.”
The Four Sundays series continues on February 18 with Raï, Algerian Music of the Street,
an afternoon featuring the American premiere of a film, “Khaled,” on screen and a
live performance by Syncop, a Raï band from Montréal. The event, which is sponsored
by the Kahn Liberal Arts Institute, begins at 2 p.m. at the Academy of Music.
The Really Big Show, a popular revue, concludes the Four Sundays
series on February 25, at 2 p.m. at the Academy of Music, with Amy Johnquest emceeing
a lineup of performers, including a hoop master, jugglers, singer-songwriters, comedy,
stories, laughs, and a powerhouse stage band.
