The Kathleen Compton Sherrerd ’54 and John J.F. Sherrerd Prizes for Distinguished Teaching

About this year's winners

Past Sherrerd Award winners

In the fall of 2002, Kathy and Jay Sherrerd provided a generous contribution to Smith College for the specific purpose of establishing a new set of annual prizes to recognize sustained and distinguished teaching records of long-time faculty, and to encourage younger faculty whose demonstrated enthusiasm and excellence influences students and colleagues.

The 2006-07 recipients of the Kathleen Compton Sherrerd ’54 and John J.F. Sherrerd Prizes for Distinguished Teaching are (pictured left to right):

Justin Cammy, assistant professor of Jewish studies

John Hellweg, professor of theater

Samuel Intrator, associate professor of education and child study

Kevin Shea, assistant professor of chemistry

Each year, an awards committee of faculty and students pores through nomination letters from students, faculty, staff and alumnae throughout the community. From a narrowed list, the committee then reviews data such as student course evaluations, advising records, contributions to the college curriculum, participation in teaching workshops, and other teaching activities. From the final short list, the award recipients are then chosen after committee members observe classes and conduct interviews with candidates’ colleagues.

The Sherrerd Awards Selection Committee was chaired in 2005-06 by David W. Cohen, professor of mathematics and a 2004 Sherrerd Award winner, and included Susan Etheredge, interim associate dean of the faculty and a 2005 Sherrerd Award winner, as well as Carolyn Martin ’06 and Emily Tyner ’06.
