Face Time—Praxis Edition

Praxis internship: Children's Hospital, Boston, division of Gynecology and the Center for Young Women's Health.

What were your job responsibilities?

Organizing, coordinating and executing "Art Up! Act Up!" an art and poetry contest to raise awareness about family and community violence in the lives of Boston youth. I also worked in the Boston community to raise awarness about youth violence and sat on a committee to plan the second annual city-wide Girl's Summit.

Describe the physical surroundings where you worked.

I basically rotated desks depending on what day it was. A lot of small offices and flourescent lighting.

What did you wear to work?

I tried to wear business casual clothing while getting away with flip flops! Thursdays were clinic days which meant a lot of button down shirts and pinstripe pants.

Describe the people you worked with.

I worked with a diverse group of nurses, doctors, administrators, high school peer leaders and educators. They were great!

What did you like most about your internship?

Being part of the Boston network of people working on youth and girl violence. I also loved getting to have my own project and seeing it from start to finish.

What's your favorite memory of the summer?

Wednesday movie nights with my roommates and friends in the area.

What were your living arrangements?

My parents were away for the summer so I lived in the apartment I grew up in with two roommates from Smith.

Describe your typical day.

Get up 10 minutes too late, find work appropriate clothing, hope my roommate made coffee, get to work, go to meetings with different community organizations, promote the contest, go to Back Bay Yoga Studio, make dinner and chill out with my roommates at home.

How did you spend your free time?

Lauging with friends, doing lots of yoga, and playing Frisbee at the beach.

What did you learn from this internship?

So much! I learned to organize a citywide event, to navigate being part of a large organization like Children's Hospital, to see Boston as a totally different city, and most importantly, from talking to all different health professionals, I learned what I want to be when I grow up: a nurse practitioner midwife!
