Face Time—Praxis Edition

Min Jung Kim ’08

From: Seoul, Korea
Major: psychology
Praxis internship: Lab technician in the Antioxidants Research Laboratory, Tufts University Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, Boston.

What were your job responsibilities?

My research job responsibilities were writing down EVERYTHING I do. I had to record the time, the material, the amount, and even a little pipetting movement on my lab notebook.

Describe the physical surroundings where you worked.

It was an ordinary academic lab with a bunch of chemical bottles and tubes and pipettes. HNRCA was located in Chinatown, and it was fun to go out for lunch with people that I worked with.

What did you wear to work?

It was very casual. I wore jeans and t-shirts to work. It may sound strange, but a lab is a very comfortable place to work.

Describe the people you worked with.

I worked with the sweetest people. People got along very well in the lab and I felt like I knew them for my lifetime.

What did you like most about your internship?

I had never worked in a science lab before. This was my very first time, and I thought they would teach me everything! But they made me learn from reading and experiments on my own, which was tough but very helpful. I had to plan and design my own project.

What's your favorite memory of the summer?

My favorite memory of the summer was seeing my best friends from Smith in New York City. We were working in different cities on the east coast, so did not get to see each other. So, we chose one weekend and got together in NYC and had a priceless time as we always do together.

What were your living arrangements?

I rented an apartment in Back Bay, Boston, Thankfully, my parents supported me financially.

Describe your typical day.

I woke up at 6 in the morning, and fed my bunnies and puppy. Work from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and go to yoga class from 4:30 to 6. And have dinner with my boyfriend, and go for a run with my puppy and my boyfriend.

How did you spend your free time?

I spent my free time trying different restaurants in Boston. I love food, and trying out new restaurants is one of my favorite things to do.

What did you learn from this internship?

I am so grateful that I worked in a nutrition research center. I have had so many plans for my future, and I was always very uncertain about my future career. However, after the internship, I know what I really want to do with my life. The internship helped me narrow down my future options in a good way!
