Smith began the year by unveiling a redesigned Web site that appeals to the best students, connects with alumnae and inspires engagement and investment in the college. In turn, the site provides many ways to share notable Smith stories. Among this year's highlights: Alumnae invested in Smith by donating a celebrated painting by an American artist, and by funding the construction of an artificial turf athletic field. In the spring, Smith inked a plan to achieve carbon neutrality within two decades, an effort in which students played a critical role. After a devastating earthquake struck Haiti in January, the Smith community came together to mourn the loss of alumnae and aid recovery efforts. Now, as the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico portends long-term destruction there, the community is again pursuing ways to get involved in its documentation and cleanup. Here are some 2010 Smith highlights as reported on the Gate.
