"Sundays at Two" Lecture
Series at Forbes Library Begins Nov. 19 with Author Elinor Lipman
This year's "Sundays at Two"
series, sponsored by the Friends of Forbes Library and Smith
College, will begin with a presentation by local author Elinor
Lipman. Lipman will talk about the process she uses in writing
fiction and answer questions from the audience at 2 p.m. Sunday,
Nov. 19, in the Calvin Coolidge Room, Forbes Library. The event
is free and open to the public.
Lipman is the author of six works of
fiction, including the best-selling "Isabel's Bed,"
a collection of stories and, her latest novel, "The Ladies'
Man." She has recently completed a new novel, "Dearly
Beloved." Writing about "The Inn at Lake Devine"
for The New York Times Book Review, critic and author Lore Dickstein
said, "Like an inspired alchemist, Lipman has converted
serious subjects into humor," citing such topics as the
rights of birth mothers in "Then She Found Me," interracial
dating in "The Way Men Act" and sexual politics in
"Isabel's Bed."
Born and raised in Lowell, Lipman graduated
from Simmons College, where she studied journalism, and began
writing fiction in an adult education workshop at Brandeis University.
Her first short story was published in 1981 in Yankee Magazine,
and her first book was published in 1987. Several of her novels
are in development as films. Lipman also writes essays and book
reviews.
Jane Dyer, author of children's books
will be the second speaker in the "Sundays at Two"
series on Dec. 11.
