Boys Choir of Harlem to Perform at Smith

The world-renowned Boys Choir of Harlem, featuring 62 conservatory-trained boys in grades 4 through 12, will present a public concert of classical, spiritual, jazz and pop works at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, in John M. Greene Hall, Smith College.

Tickets for the performance, which are $15 for the general public and $5 for college students and senior citizens, are available at the Northampton Box Office (413) 586-8686 or B-Side Records, Northampton. Smith College students with ID and children age 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. Seating is general admission; doors will open at 6 p.m. The hall is wheelchair accessible.

Founded in 1968 as a small church choir, the Boys Choir of Harlem, Inc., has evolved into a performing and educational institution the Choir Academy that provides more than 500 inner city boys and girls a comprehensive program of education, counseling and training in the performing arts.

The Choir has an artistic repertoire ranging from classical music to jazz, contemporary songs, gospel spirituals and specially commissioned works by leading African-American composers. It has performed at the White House and the United Nations and at state visits of dignitaries, including Nelson Mandela and Pope John Paul II.
